Success Stories

All of our member organizations do great work to protect our environment and our health every day. Here is just a sampling of their achievements. Your generous donations to the Environmental Fund for Pennsylvania make these success stories possible.

Allegheny Land Trust
Since its inception in 2001, Allegheny Land Trust has been able to protect over 1,400 acres from development in Allegheny and Washington counties. Further strengthening the conservation efforts of ALT, the organization has trained approximately thirty site stewards and has initiated a project that passively treats 2.8 million gallons of water each day, which will be used to keep 43 tons of iron oxide from harming the Chartiers Creek each year.

Audubon PA
With an extensive history of bird protection in Pennsylvania, Audubon has trained over 450 volunteers in bird monitoring and has established the thriving Important Bird Areas Programs (which since 1996 has led scientists to identify over 81 areas across Pennsylvania).

Clean Air Council
The Clean air Council led a project which retrofitted 60 drayages trucks (older trucks used to make short trips from ports to distribution centers) with pollution control devices that are expected to annually emit 25-50% less particulate matter, up to 50% less hydrocarbons, and 20-50% less carbon monoxide. Additionally, the Clean Air Council will oversee the replacement of two diesel service vehicles with two newer, cleaner models, which will result in annual Oxides of Nitrogen reductions of almost a quarter ton, and particulate matter emissions from these two vehicles will be reduced by 97.4%. The Council is coordinating a partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and other air quality advocates on the IdleFreePA program which distributes anti-idling educational materials at truck stops, welcome centers, eating establishments, and rest areas across Pennsylvania. Truck and bus idling is a concern for the Council because exposure to soot from diesel exhaust is linked to increased risk for asthma, heart attack, stroke, and cancer. Many counties in Pennsylvania exceed the maximum level of soot in the air permitted under the federal clean air laws partly due to unnecessary idling. The typical truck can waste 1,400 to 2,800 gallons of diesel fuel annually on idling, costing more than $3,500 a year and generating additional greenhouse gases.

Energy Coordinating Agency of Philadelphia (ECA)
The Energy Coordinating Agency of Philadelphia (ECA) established the LEED Gold Standard John S. and James L. Knight Green Jobs Training Center. The ECA has trained 646 individuals for green jobs. 115 of these students have been trained to the national standard of Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst. 164 unemployed and incumbent workers have been trained to work as Installers, Crew Chiefs, and Auditors in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). 82 students have been trained as Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Raters or Field Inspectors. Additionally, more than 240 contractors throughout the state have been trained to support the Home Performance with Energy Star Program.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has properly disposed of 12, 037 tons of trash and 415,315 tires. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has recycled 25, 983 appliances and 2,272 tons of scrap metal. This great work has been performed across the state of Pennsylvania by 53,224 volunteers who donated 230,720 hours of their time.
